Among the core objectives of the Institute, building national capacity in maintaining scientific equipment and provision of maintenance service, provision of technical, informational, training and consultancy services to support end user-institutions in efficiently and hassle freely performing their own undertakings reflect the focus and direction of the institute's intervention in the area of scientific equipment.
Although depending on the practical circumstances and economic development the definition of scientific instrument could vary slightly, according to Directive No. 194/2010, enacted by the Council of Ministers of the FDRE, the term scientific instrument is defined as:
"Scientific Instrument means a device used for Research and Development, Education and training, Quality control and inspection, Metrology, or Diagnosis and treatment of human being and animals."
In the effort that the country is exerting to follow the pace of the current dynamic and rapidly changing science and technology development, scientific research, investigations and analysis, product quality monitoring, testing, controlling, and other scientific undertakings could not meet the envisaged outcomes unless scientific equipment are effectively utilized.
As almost all scientific equipment are imported foreign technologies, the mismatch between the investment for their acquisition and expected results on one hand, and the sluggish effort to replace them through scientific research by local products on the other, are core issues making scientific equipment a more critical issue than ever.
The services are rendered at a national level based on the life cycle of scientific equipment — specifically on selection, acquisition, utilization and disposal sub-processes. Four sub-areas are identified considering the principles of scientific foundation for their design and areas of application:
Medical | Medical EquipmentEquipment used in human and animal health service provision and research institutions for the purpose of diagnosis of diseases, treatment of illness, patient monitoring, artificial organ implants, life sustaining and other clinical related services. Examples: Ultrasound, Electrocardiograph, patient monitor, Electro-surgical unit, Infusion pumps, ventilators. |
Measuring and | Measuring and Analysis EquipmentEquipment used in scientific research and service rendering laboratories, more specifically in non-medical laboratories, for the purpose of measurement of physical quantities, separating and analyzing chemical compounds and solutions, testing, quality control etc. Examples: Chromatographs, spectrophotometers, calibrators (voltage, current, pressure, temperature etc.), analytical balances, pH-meters, conductivity meters. |
Nuclear | Nuclear EquipmentEquipment based on sources that emit ionizing radiation used in medical and non-medical laboratories for the purpose of medical diagnostic imaging and treatment, monitoring processes, determination and analysis, detecting and measuring etc. Examples: Medical diagnostic and industrial X-ray machines, gamma cameras, survey meters, nuclear gauges, dose-meters, gamma spectrometers. |
Electro-mechanical | Electro-mechanical EquipmentEquipment that exists in considerable quantity in medical and non-medical laboratories, used for controlling and maintaining environmental conditioning, keeping specimens, separating solutions for analysis, sterilizing, culturing etc. Examples: Autoclaves, centrifuges, refrigerators, hoods, ovens, shakers. |
