The 19th Intra-Africa Metrology System (AFRIMETS) General Assembly Concludes Successfully

Organized by the Ethiopian Metrology Institute, the 19th Intra-Africa Metrology System (AFRIMETS) General Assembly—which was held for five consecutive days from August 2 to August 6, 2026, at the Quality Village under the theme "Metrology for Digital Transformation: Reliable Measurements for Africa's Future"—has concluded successfully.
The assembly commenced on August 2 and 3 with discussions held by technical committees divided across various metrology sectors. On August 4, 2026, the main general assembly was colorfully conducted in the presence of high-ranking government officials and representatives from various African and non-African countries, including Dr. Kasahun Gofe, Minister of Trade and Regional Integration of the FDRE; Dr. Henry Kibet Rotich, President of AFRIMETS; and Dr. Mulugeta Derbew, Director General of the Ethiopian Metrology Institute.
During the opening ceremony, the three aforementioned senior leaders collectively noted that metrology is vital for ensuring Africa's future development is grounded in quality. They explained that for Africa to compete successfully in the global market, a joint development and quality-based integration is required. They emphasized that at a time when all services are transitioning toward digital systems, metrology must remain a central focus. They also recalled that hosting this event at the completed Quality Village in Ethiopia—the land of origins—indicates the country's development trajectory in strengthening its role as a convener of major international platforms.
It was further explained that Ethiopia is actively focusing on building the sector's service capacity to meet modern standards. The officials added that the assembly will help effectively realize quality infrastructure across the continent.
On the sidelines of the 19th AFRIMETS General Assembly, participants carried out a tree-planting program under the theme "Planting Hope" and visited selected museums in Addis Ababa.
Finally, participants expressed their gratitude, noting their pride in the warm reception and hospitality provided, as well as the high standard and excellence with which the Ethiopian Metrology Institute organized the conference in line with the founding objectives of AFRIMETS.
Malawi has been selected to host the next AFRIMETS General Assembly in 2027.
